CLASS LEVELS
All of our classes are identified by Levels, which indicate the strength of the practice, rather than hierarchy of achievement. This system of levels is designed to help you find classes that are appropriate for your body. You will undoubtedly be challenged no matter which level class you choose, especially if you are practicing with 100% effort, and working at your "edge." Feel free to experiment with different level classes, but always pay attention to your body's needs.
Some classes are only identified by a Level and not a Style. These classes will be a mix of different kinds of yoga, based on the background of the teacher. Please read the teacher’s bio to gain an understanding of that class, or better yet, come and try it out for yourself!
As you choose the level that is right for you, remember that part of the yoga practice is developing a sense of equanimity, accepting and respecting the limits of your body as it is in this moment, today. It is quality and integrity that is important, rather than competition and glory. This can be difficult to cultivate in our society but is one of the wonderful gifts of yoga.
Beginning
Any beginning level class is appropriate for a new student or any student who would like to work on the basics. These classes move slowly, work with traditional postures and explain accurate alignment and breathing, as well encourage everyone to learn to work at their own level by listening to their body. Emphasis is also placed on core strength, flexibility, balance, and concentration.
All Levels
All levels classes are designed to accommodate any level of student that shows up to take the class, although students should have prior experience with most yoga asana (or just a sense of adventure!). The poses will be shown in their modified version as well as the more advanced version. All students must be familiar with "working at their edges", be able to listen to their body, and work at their own highest level. These classes can be as challenging as you decide to make them. We encourage a non-competitive environment that allows you to find your own best poses and experience a meaningful practice.
Level I
Designed for new students or those who would like to continue to learn and refine the basic alignment and form of traditional Yoga Asanas. These classes move at a gentle pace, with lots of hands-on adjustments and repetition in order to create body-memory and to allow the student to become comfortable with their practice.
Level II
These classes move at a faster pace and begin to work with in more creative sequences and some advanced versions of asanas. The instructors offer modified variations for all of the postures throughout the practice, and students are invited to work at their own levels. This class is the perfect next step for people who are comfortable in our Level 1 classes or students wishing to challenge themselves a little more. Inversions and Arm Balances will be introduced with instruction.
Level III
These are strong, steady-paced classes that flow from one posture to the next and offer a variety of more advanced versions of asanas. Come prepared to work hard, build your inner fire (tapas), sweat and have fun. Although teachers may provide some modifications for all levels, students should have a strong understanding of most yoga asana and be able to work safely at their own level. It is recommended that you have at least 6 months of yoga experience before taking a Level III class. Students should already have some familiarity with inversions and arm balances, or just a sense of adventure!
